It has been just few days that the XAT 2012 exam date has been announced. Those who are serious enough to crack the tough nut for gaining entry to top B schools like XLRI, XIMB, XIME, XISS, SPJIMR, must have already started the preparation for XAT 2012.
The duration of XAT exam is two hours and twenty minutes. The sections of the paper are: Data Interpretation & Quantitative Ability, Analytical Reasoning & Decision Making, and Verbal & Logical Ability. XAT also has a question on Essay Writing whose duration is 20 minutes. XAT 2011 replaced the question on Essay Writing with Analytical Caselet.
Now let us have a look at the detailed analysis of the exam over the past 5 years.
XAT 2007
XAT 2007 had 130 questions. The Quantitative Ability section had 49 questions. The questions were also from Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency. The DI questions were very time consuming. The questions from Quant were on Higher Maths. The Reasoning & Decision Making Ability section was quite tough. Decision making questions involved reading a passage and then taking decisions based on the information provided there.
The Verbal Ability section was comparatively easier. It had four Reading Comprehension passages. The other questions were on grammar, Para-forming, logical reasoning and rewriting sentences.
The Essay Writing was on the topic ‘Economic growth without environmental damage – mirage or reality'.
XAT 2008
XAT 2008 paper had 120 questions and the overall difficulty level was tough. The Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability section had 38 questions. This was the toughest section in the paper.
The Verbal & Logical Ability section was also of tough difficulty level. It had 38 questions. The Analytical Reasoning & Decision Making section had 38 questions which were of Moderate difficulty level.
The Essay Writing topic was ‘The consequence of gender imbalance – The Third World War ‘.

XAT 2009 saw a drastic drop in the number of questions from 120 to 104. The overall difficulty level was tough. The section Data Interpretation & Quantitative Ability had 38 questions which was extremely tough.
The Verbal & logical Ability questions were 35. The Analytical Reasoning & Decision Making section had 31 questions. This section was relatively easier.
The Essay Writing came on the topic ‘The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of riches; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries'.

XAT 2010 had 101 questions and the difficulty level was very tough. The Data Interpretation & Quantitative Ability section had 40 questions. This was the toughest section in the paper. The Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning section had 31 questions. The difficulty level of this section was tough. The Analytical Reasoning & Decision Making section had 30 questions. The difficulty level was very tough and the section was lengthy.
The Essay Writing topic was ‘Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need but not every man's greed'.

XAT 2011 paper had 101 questions and as usual the difficulty level was very tough.
